How do i open an in-home day care in Michigan?
I am a senior majoring in Sp. Ed at EMU and I am not ready to work outside the home. I want to earn an income doing something helpful to Others- and that I know I will succeed at…and still be home with my own children. Just looking for a point in the right direction on in-home day care businesses. Any info is very much appreciated. Thanks and God bless.

I suggest you prepare a business plan. Even if you will not be applying for a bank loan, a business plan helps you to think through your business – what it needs, who it will benefit, how much it will cost, and what is its potential. I had a home daycare in Michigan. I went to the family services of my county and they gave me the phone number of who is in charge for our county. I had to take a class, only a day class. I had to have 3 personal references. I had to have a list of my toys…and lesson plans. I had to have the furnace inspected and smoke detecters. I had to have latches on the cupboards and make sure their are lock on the basement door (if your not going to use the basement for your daycare)and 2 exits for fire safety. The list is sort of long, but its not that hard. You can care for up to 6 children I believe without hiring a helper. I think only 2 of them can be infants though…not for sure anymore. If you care for infants you must have a crib. You can also get financial help through the state for the meals you serve, its a very good program. It is lots of fun and can be a very good career. I tried that .. I am in Michigan and I had to have furnace inspected and water tested .. Your paperwork does go through FIA, it cost me about $250 for the inspections and fee's.
you have to have a list of toys and activities for the kids. A min of 10 was required ie: swing set, merry-go-round .. just any 10 activities. Also a fire extinguisher and CPR class was required and a home visit from the worker that handled approving your license.
The only problem is .. you dont always get paid from the parents. I am sorry, I am short this week can I catch you next week .. lots of sad stories out there and I fell for them all.
Then when most didnt bring a lunch (like they were suppose to) I had to feed them too.
If you are looking for something to do (to work from home) that doesnt require a huge start up fee and all the headache ..
I partnered with a company about four years ago and have been very pleased with them. Plus they are members of the BBB which was important to me with all the scams out there.
I dont have to Stock Inventory or sell products nor do I have to take orders, deliver anything or get stung with bad checks when making collections … Did that in the past, NOT again!
