Choosing the Right Baby Skin Care Routine

There is more to baby skin care than most new parents realize. Proper infant skin care means caring for all of a baby’s skin (aka the whole body). Newborn infants are especially prone to skin irritations and problems because it takes a while for their skin to get used to the world that exists outside of their mOthers’ wombs. Proper baby skin care means that parents must make good decisions continually throughout the day. Everything you do from dressing your baby to bathing her will affect her skin. Don’t freak out yet–good skin care does not have to be complicated or difficult. With some basic common sense, skin care can be incredibly easy. Here are some tips to help you out as you get used to the new routine. By the way, you might also find this advice on how to stop bed wetting to be helpful.

Believe it or not, your newborn and young infant does not need to have a bath every night. Most infants don’t get very dirty early on in life. This is because they are mostly immobile and depend on their parents to get them from point A to point B. Because they are immobile, a baby’s parents are easily able to control what a baby can get into. While your baby is still considered a “newborn” he or she only needs to be given a bath twice a week or so (as long as you keep his or her face free of dirt). Once they become mobile, however, daily baths are important. Before giving your son or daughter new toys, clothes or letting him or her sleep on new bedding, make sure everything (except the baby of course) gets washed in gentle and hypoallergenic detergent. This will help get rid of any elements that might otherwise find their way onto your baby’s skin and cause an irritation. This practice is one most adults keep throughout their lives. Give it some thought: do you wear new clothes before you wash them? No!

A newborn’s skin is far too sensitive to light to be taken outdoors into direct sunlight–even if you do everything you can to protect your baby’s skin with sunblock. After your son or daughter is six months old it is okay to let him or her sit in direct sunlight provided you cover the baby completely with strong sunscreen.

Covering your baby’s head with a hat and shading the two of you with an umbrella are extra precautions you can take. If your son or daughter does develop a sunburn (even with all of the precautions you have taken) you can treat it with a damp cool cloth a few times a day. The number one element of skin care is keeping it clean. People like to overcomplicate things, especially when it comes to health and beauty, but this is one thing that is best left simple. All of our grown-up skin products do not help a baby keep their luxurious skin. Don’t use your baby as a lab mouse with these products because they aren’t made for babies. Practice common sense when it comes to your baby’s skin care routine. Remember, there is no need to overcomplicate something that is not complicated to begin with.
